Health Careers Day
Year 9 students from Rochester Secondary College had a close up and hands on look at the careers within Rochester and Elmore District Health Service in June. Cheryl Petrini and the staff at REDHS put together a range of highly interactive workshops for students to get a taste of careers in the health sector, including nursing, physiotherapy, podiatry, dietetics, lifestyle activities, occupational therapy and the administration support roles.
The last workshop of the day was a case study of all the roles involved in a patient’s journey from the arrival of an ambulance, through surgery and a stay in hospital, to rehabilitation and support to return home. Students took on the various roles, with props and outfits provided. Sunny weather meant that the students could enjoy a BBQ lunch outside before boarding the bus to return to school. Student feedback showed that the interactive style of the workshops with enjoyed, and the day has created ongoing conversations in careers classes back at school. CCLLEN assisted with organising the day and funded transport, morning tea and lunch.
